CLAP - Design & Emotion

Inculcating a habit of Appreciation

CLAP name-04.png

“The deepest principle of human nature is the craving to be appreciated.”
- William James

This course was about understanding how a product can help in evoking the same emotion as a particular habit. I chose to work on increasing the habit of appreciation towards people around us. CLAP is a cyclic chocolate packaging concept which makes appreciating easy & intuitive. It consists of 4 chocolate thins. The appreciator gives the clap to person A with a note who then passes it on to person B. Through experiments,I found out that people find it easier to write a compliment than say it out loud. And what’s better than complementing a compliment with a chocolate?

WHAT

In this fast moving world, we do not take the time out to appreciate things and people. We fail to recognize the goodness around us. Due to reasons like under confidence, sheer ignorance or fear of judgement, we do not speak our mind out to appreciate.

Appreciation comes with wonderful benefits. It makes us think positively, at least for that moment. Not only does appreciation make those around us feel good, but it also boosts our self confidence and increases positivity. Appreciation signals engagement, builds morale and gives purpose. Appreciation affects the human body psychologically as well as physiologically. Whether the gesture is big or small, appreciating has the capability to put a smile on one’s face.

We must make appreciation a natural part of our lives, and this is one small way to do it!

WHY

WHAT IS APPRECIATION?

Recognition and enjoyment of the good qualities of someone or something.

When you express your appreciation,
you are basically saying,
“I  notice you. You are making a difference.”

HOW CLAP WORKS ?

1. Buy a pack of CLAP for someone whom you want to appreciate.

2. Write a message.

3. Tear the CLAP.

4. Appreciate by giving the CLAP chocolate.

5. Also give the rest 3 CLAPS to be passed on.

6. Hence, create a cycle of appreciation.

WHY 'CLAP' ?

+ When you appreciate someone, that person appreciates you for appreciating them.

+ Usually when we clap, it makes a loud sound and grabs attention. That’s what we’re trying to do by directing attention towards that person.

+ The chocolate packaging folds open and close like a clap.

+ The most common gesture for appreciating /congratulating someone or something is Clapping.

RESEARCH EXPERIMENT 1

We asked students of MIT Institute of Design, what Appreciation means to them/what makes them feel valued?

From the responses, we understood that whether the appreciation is a single kind word, a pat on the back, a note or an award, the emotion experienced makes each one feel happy and motivated.

RESEARCH EXPERIMENT 2

Participants were asked to think of somebody whom they appreciate and write down their feelings about that person. After which, they were told to call that person up and read out what they just wrote.

INFERENCES :

1. Saying something good about someone makes you feel good too.
2. We often assume that people know what we feel about them so we don’t bother actually saying it out loud.
3. Humans love hearing nice things about themselves.
4. It is difficult to say what we feel to the most intimate relations we have. (eg: parents)
5. It feels the best when you least expect any appreciation.

INSIGHTS

1. It is easier to appreciate by writing than speaking.

2. An environment of appreciation makes people appreciate more.

3. People love revisiting old notes of appreciation and feeling good.
